How to choose your first vibrator

There is no "best" vibrator — there is the one that suits how you like to be stimulated. Once you know what the main types actually do, choosing becomes much easier than the wall of products suggests.

The main types, and who they suit

• Bullet vibrators — small, pinpoint, usually the cheapest. Great as a first toy or as a warm-up before something bigger.
• Rabbit vibrators — a shaft plus an external arm, so internal and external stimulation happen at the same time. A classic first "step up" toy.
• Wands — broad, deep vibration, excellent for external use. Powerful, but often louder and larger.
• G-spot vibrators — curved or angled shafts designed for internal stimulation, often with a flatter head.
• Couple's and remote-control toys — worn during sex or controlled from a phone, useful if you want something you can share.

What actually matters when buying

1. Material. Body-safe silicone is the safest everyday choice: non-porous, easy to clean and soft to the touch. Avoid unknown "jelly" or TPE blends for anything you insert if you can — they are porous and hold bacteria.
2. Power settings. Look for several steady speeds rather than only patterns. Patterns are fun; steady speeds are what most people use.
3. Noise. Anything marketed as quiet is usually under 50 dB in use. If discretion matters, favour bullets and smaller rabbits over full-size wands.
4. Waterproofing. An IPX7 rating means you can rinse it under the tap and use it in the shower. It also makes cleaning much simpler.
5. Power source. Rechargeable via USB-C or magnetic charging is the norm; battery models are handy as travel backups.
6. Size. If you are new to internal play, start with a modest diameter. You can always size up later.

A toy that is slightly less powerful but comfortable enough to use often will do more for you than a powerful one that stays in the drawer.

Getting started well

Use lubricant — a water-based one is compatible with every toy and every condom. Start on the lowest setting and work up. Clean the toy before first use and after every use with warm water and a dedicated toy cleaner or mild unscented soap, then let it dry completely before storage.
