Bondage for beginners: safety first, then fun

Bondage covers everything from a silk scarf around the wrists to full restraint systems. The equipment is the easy part; the habits around it are what make it good.

Agree before you start

• Talk it through sober, beforehand. What you both want to try, what is off the table, and what happens if one of you changes their mind.
• Pick a safeword that will never come up naturally ("red" and "amber" work well, or any word that is out of context). A safeword stops everything immediately, no discussion in the moment.
• Agree on check-ins. Every few minutes, a simple "colour?" — green for keep going, amber for slow down, red for stop.
• Never restrain someone who is gagged without a non-verbal signal, such as holding a set of keys to drop.

Non-negotiables

1. Nothing around the neck, ever, for beginners. Breath play is a separate, high-risk practice.
2. Avoid prolonged pressure on the inside of wrists, elbows and behind the knees — that is where nerves run close to the surface.
3. Keep safety scissors within reach of the person doing the tying, and never leave a restrained person alone.
4. Cuffs should allow a finger underneath. Numbness, tingling or colour change means release immediately.

Good first purchases

Soft cuffs with quick-release clips, a blindfold and a bed restraint kit that tucks under the mattress are the classic starter set — nothing needs to be tied tightly, and everything releases in one motion. Start with 10–15 minutes and keep it light.

Restraint is about trust and anticipation. If it feels like a performance you have to finish, stop and reset.

Afterwards

Aftercare is part of the experience, not an optional extra. Water, a blanket, a shower together, and a plain conversation about what worked. Some people feel emotional or shaky afterwards; that is normal and a calm, unhurried wind-down is what settles it.
