Anal play for beginners: go slow, use lube

Anal play rewards patience more than any other kind. The muscles involved are supposed to be tight — they relax with slowness and relaxation, not with force.

The two rules that matter most

1. Lubricant, and plenty of it. The anus does not self-lubricate. A thicker water-based gel or a silicone-based lubricant works best; reapply often, and reapply before anything feels dry.
2. A flared base, always. Anything going in must have a base wider than the opening. This is not a preference — it is the one piece of equipment you cannot skip, for anything from a small plug to a vibrator.

How to start

• Begin with external play and gentle pressure, and only continue when you are genuinely relaxed.
• Start with a finger or a small, smooth plug rather than a large toy. Silicone is warm, soft and non-porous — the best beginner material.
• Breathe out as you insert. Pushing against a held breath is what causes the "sharp" feeling.
• If it hurts, stop and reset. A stinging sensation means not enough lubricant or too fast; a sharp pain means stop entirely.

There is no schedule to keep up with. Sessions of two minutes are a perfectly good starting point.

Shapes and what they do

• Plugs — for fullness and short wear. Small, tapered, flared base.
• Prostate massagers — curved toward the front, designed for the prostate. Often the most rewarding first internal toy for people with a prostate.
• Vibrating plugs and beads — for extra sensation; start non-vibrating first.
• Dildos with flared/wide bases — for thrusting, once you are comfortable.

Hygiene

Wash toys with warm water and a dedicated toy cleaner before and after use, and dry fully. Silicone can be boiled briefly if you want a deep clean, but check the product instructions first — anything with a motor or battery cannot. Use a fresh condom on a toy if you are sharing it. Never move a toy from anal to vaginal play without changing the condom or washing it thoroughly.
